Local technology firm introduces Internet commerce software

KITCHENER, Ontario (August 24, 1998) -- Internet consumer sales are expected to reach $6.1 billion by the end of this year, rising to $20 billion by the year 2000. As a result, it's no surprise that organizations of all shapes and sizes are jumping on the e-Commerce bandwagon in an attempt to get a piece of the pie. Unfortunately, developing a web site capable of generating revenue can be a technically challenging and expensive proposition, leaving most companies on the sidelines as major firms develop theirs.

To address these concerns, The Galileo Group today announced the launch of their Internet commerce software, Galileo Commerce.

Galileo Commerce (GC) is a user-friendly e-Commerce package geared towards small and medium sized businesses. "Large organizations like the Walmarts and LL Bean's of the world have the capital to develop custom systems for their requirements," says Bryon Thur, Galileo's VP of Sales & Marketing. "Unfortunately, most companies don't have the resources required to undertake such a huge project, which is why we've developed Galileo Commerce."

Galileo Commerce operates as a complete retail storefront. It's a multi-currency system that supports secure credit card transactions, calculates worldwide shipping costs based on the size and weight of products, and adds applicable taxes to purchases. In addition, Galileo Commerce allows a retailer to completely manage their online catalog and monitor crucial web site data through a private Administration area.

Security, a common concern of Internet shoppers and vendors, was of special concern when developing the system. "GC supports industry standard security and encryption techniques," says Thur, "which comfort online shoppers and make them confident that providing financial information to an Internet vendor is as safe as if they were shopping in a physical store."

Galileo Commerce is currently being used successfully on a number of web sites, including the award-winning Braun's Bicycle (www.brauns.com), Fergus-based Nights in White Flannel (www.whiteflannel.com) and others. In addition, many new GC sites are in development.
